Social Media, all the buzz is about sharing, you can share this with your friends and share that with your friends.
Every where you look you see “programs” promising to get you hundreds of twitter followers… everyone is into the Social Media Gold Rush, and most of em don’t know what they’re doing or why.
Who Follows You?
Why Would Someone WANT To Follow You?
What Criteria Do YOU Use To Decide To Follow Anyone?
Are you using social media to share or are you simply spamming the bejeebers out of your followers?
What are you attempting to accomplish with social media?
Are you viewing it as a form of advertising? (how’s that working out for you?)
Why does anybody follow anyone? Do they follow blindly? Is it altruistic?
Why do I follow anybody?
Here’s a rule of thumb I’ve adopted in my 10 years of SEO and 4 years of immersing my self into the art form of social media:
There are only 4 reasons why anyone should follow anyone – What is that persons utility to me?:
- You might be able to sell them something
- You might know someone who might need them (and that could make you look good in that 3rd parties eyes)
- You just might need something FROM them
- You just want access to that person’s follow-ing
For #4 keep in mind: If you’re selling real estate social media consulting, and a real estate agent seeks to befriend you, and that real estate person has a bunch of other real estate agent/ social media wannabes following them… it could be of benefit to you to follow the guy (or gal), not because you’re really thinking this person might buy consulting FROM you… but his followers MIGHT
What are some rules of thumb anyone can use to help decide if someone is worth following?
- If every tweet has a link embedded in it… chances are this guy is selling and not buying, not likely to ever buy anything from you or from anyone else
- You hit reply and get ignored, how’s that make you feel? It’s like calling a business on the phone number they posted online and get an answering machine, and no one ever returns your call
If on the other hand you just use the strategy of following back any fool that follows you… what’s that likely to do for you? (or for them for that matter?)
Here is a blog post from a real estate agent who claims that one way social marketing works, I beg to differ, and said so in the comment I left on the post
If you’re wanting to use what has been come to be known as “web2.o properties”, or social networks to pitch your wares… and you’re thinking that you’re gonna use conventional advertising methodologies, you’re likely to be very disappointed. Push Advertising may have worked well for the past 60 years but the social aspect of social media has rendered that method useless.
Google first, then Facebook plus Google changed all that.
No one buys anything without first sitting down to a blank Google screen and Googling it. That’s right, Googling is now a verb, it’s permanently part of the lexicon. People no longer tolerate “being advertised to”, the concept of conventional advertising not only doesn’t work, it actually pisses many people off.
So what does work? Word of Mouth Advertising?
I’ll submit to you that a recommendation from one Facebook friend to another Facebook friend will close a hell of a lot more sales for your product or service than any print ad/ magazine ad/ radio air time ad spend/ or even a TV commercial.
When a social network member asks another social network member ( that they’ve developed an ongoing trust for, a relationship with) says “I’ve tried service X and they’re great”… you can’t buy that kind of advertising, and it’s the most effective form of advertising today.
Word of Facebook Advertising Works
Push Advertising
push advertising The process of communicating advertising material to an Internet user without the user making an explicit request for the material. A good example of this form of advertising is SPAMMING.
Source Encyclopedia.com
Push advertising refers to all efforts to get the word out to an entire group of potential customers in order to hit the few that many be currently interested in your product or service. Most traditional offline advertising efforts (magazine, billboard, newspaper, tv, classifieds, etc) as well as online banners ads and email broadcasts are considered push marketing.

Push Advertising where your advertising model consists of simply informing the public that company X exists and performs service Y and can be reached by calling X phone number assumes several things: it assumes your prospect knows what X is, and knows that they need X, and wa.sn’t aware that X could be secured locally. This is surely better than no advertising at all but it’s ROI (return on investment) is poor at best and could be totally non existant
- Consumers do not trust advertising
- Consumers do not want to view advertising
-
Consumers do not need advertising
The Ages Old Model of Pushing an ad on someone when they’re looking for something else no longer produces sales… it simply pisses people off.
