There are lots of things you can do TO your website to optimize it (translation: SEO= search engine optimization, get Google to like your site more), and you should do those things… but nothing improves rank more than pleasing Google’s Page Rank algorithm.

Now, what y0u want to do is to build relationships with other websites in your region. You want to get local (to you) websites to add YOUR link to their website. How do you do this? Google your geographical area (and nothing else, just the enter the neighborhood you do business in), you’re looking for the highest ranking domains that allow you “register” on, and get your link added to your profile on said page.
Alternatively you create external blogs ABOUT your geographical area, they are YOUR blogs, but they are about YOUR region, and you get to put YOUR link on those regional blogs. I call these “second tier” blogs or “supporting blogs”.
