So how does one go about improving their companies ranking in social media?
One word: Algorithms
The search boxes on social media are similar to the search boxes on search engines… only easier.
Basic SEO is not about using meta tags, it’s about the first line of line of text you use... Google takes pays the most attention to the first words that come out of your websites’ mouth.
The secret to ranking is copywriting… it’s text and text alone.
No text, no ranking
How can Google decide if your site *should* rank higher than another? Google certainly wont take your word for it. (some years ago some sick minded people created websites that purported to be about one subject, say: girl scout cookies or something similar), as soon as Google ranked those “girl scout cookie” websites the sick minded people redirected the url to a porn site…subterfuge like this could have seriously damaged Google’s credibility if left unchecked.
Google wont just take your word for what you say your site is about, it will send Googlebot out to double check… if your site purports to be about X and Googlebot doesn’t see X say bye bye to your chances of being ranked in Google!
What is Googlebot looking for?
Text, like the first line of text you publish on your site. In other words the first words coming out of your mouth should be the single keyword phrase you’d like to be found under in Google.
If the first line of text is “welcome to my website” you’ve just wasted 21 characters of the most valuable real estate on your site. It gets worse…this site with “welcome to my website” will begin to show up in Google under the search term “welcome” and “website”, if you were selling welcome cards or you built websites that might not be so bad..
How does Google decide who gets to be #1, #2 and so on? That is the same thing as asking how does Google go about Ranking one site higher than another.
If you didn’t know this, search engines are websites, websites are powered by web servers, a webserver is a PC just like your PC only it’s hooked up to a much bigger pipeline than your home or office PC is hooked up to. Webservers can have programs installed on them just like your home or office PC can have MS Word or MS Excel installed on it.
Search Engines Are Powered by Algorithms
The algorithm Google uses is called GoogleBot. It is looking to rate or rank websites according to parameters coded into it’s algorithm.
What do graphics do for improving your ranking in Google? zero, nada, zip
Googlebot can not make subjective distinctions, it can’t look at a picture and figure out the subtle differences or nuances… it can’t tell the Mona Lisa from a toddlers finger painting, all it sees is code
Text is king, if two sites are competing for ranking, one has 4o words… the other has 450 words, the one with more text wins: EVEN IF THE TEXT IS GIBBERISH (provided the gibberish has keyword phrases and paragraph headings that are keyword phrases.
