Twitter Marketing Mistakes

From what I see of small businesses using twitter many are using twitter as if it were an ad blaster.

What I’m about to say is coming from someone who until recently did the same thing in the name of SEO

(Full Disclosure: I am a local SEO (search engine optimization) contractor, small businesses hire me to get their company website to outrank their competitors in local search results)

Ad blasting is obnoxious… remember I just said I did it, not deliberately but an err of omission.I was concerned only with my links getting picked up by (and favored by) Google. And it worked.

While tweeting every listing, every day DOES serve to “get your message out” it also comes at a price.

Twitter is a SOCIAL platform, the “social” in Social Media means two way communication. If you’re gonna use the damn thing, answer it. Use it as if it were a phone (maybe even a replacement FOR the phone).

While I was busy getting my links out there I ignored what appeared to be “mindless chatter” every time I viewed Twitter. It appeared to me as if everyone else was doing the “shameless self promotion” thing so why wouldn’t I? I ignored twitter save for my ability to “ad blast”

IF you want others to read your stuff, leave a method of having them reach out to you.

What do you think people are likely to think of you if they reply and you ignore them?

the local newspapers are getting their butts handed to them on a platter by the public’s use of search and by social media. They are “getting on the twitter bandwagon

Answer Your Damn Twitter.

In spite of the fact that the big three search engines are falling all over themselves to incorporate “real time news” and your ad blasts are being passed off as news (thus getting your links and the short blurb associated with your links skyrocketing to the top of search results)..

Despite the fact that back links are the largest part of getting one website to rank higher than it’s competitors website in Google search results (especially local search results) those 2 aspects are NOT the best use of twitter.

People no longer want to send emails, they want to comment.
