Windows 10 – It’s FREE – Why SHOULDN’T I upgrade?

Windows 10 Upgrade Pic

Hmmmm…okay, since this is my first blog post for CWP I need to decide if I’m going to be completely frank or sugar-coat this…screw-it – I’m an up-front gal, so here we go…since when has FREE become such a GOOD THING??  Sure, if you’re going to give me a FREE CAR, I’ll take it – but before I do I’m going to ask what it’s REALLY going to cost me because I can’t think of any reason for someone to just give me a free car.  There’s ALWAYS A COST!  So what’s the cost with Windows 10?  Well, first of all they need users to USE the product to figure out what’s wrong with it.  If you want to be their guinea pig, that’s completely your choice!  I know I wouldn’t do it…there’s most always a cost for this type of free.

Here’s the scoop with new Microsoft products – especially the Operating System.  Hardware vendors aren’t ready with drivers for Windows 10, so after you upgrade and your printer doesn’t work or your wi-fi won’t connect – know that it is more than likely a result of no driver for that piece of hardware available to work with Windows 10.  And the same goes for software – I can almost guarantee that the older version of your Estimating software won’t work.  And how about AutoCAD?  I just checked their site and “Windows 10 is not yet an officially supported operating system across the Autodesk product line. Autodesk intends to support many of our key products on Windows 10 and will add products to the list of products supported on Windows 10 as updates and future versions are released. “ (source: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Windows-10-support-for-Autodesk-products.html).  And then there’s the big Sage products – only the most current version (15.1) of Sage 300 CRE & Estimating are supported, nothing prior.  Damn, you mean the version I bought just last year won’t work?

Bottom line, I know a lot of you are excited about the FREE upgrade – I’m not, I’ve been burned by too many bad Microsoft Operating Systems (remember Windows ME or Millennium Edition? MS doesn’t even include it in their timeline of operating systems!  And then there was Vista, need I say more?).  The free offer is available until at July 29th, 2016.  I PROMISE I will let you know when I feel it’s safe to upgrade – it may not be before the free upgrade ending though if I’m still not confident it will work for the masses!

I know you’ve got questions, so go ahead and leave them below – maybe we can get other thoughts on my rant!  And if you don’t enjoy wearing your big girl/boy panties and would rather have me sugar-coat my stuff, lol, you can let me know that below as well 🙂
